Delhi: Amidst declining air quality, Imran Hussain reviews action plan

[India], Oct 23 (ANI): Delhi Environment Minister Imran Hussain on Tuesday reviewed the preparedness and action plan of the various stakeholder departments for implementing the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) mandated by the Supreme Court for combating and mitigating air pollution in New Delhi.

The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, Commissioners of North, South and East Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Chairman of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Secretary (Environment), Secretary (Transport and Power), and Special Secretary (Industries), Chief Engineer of Public Works Department (PWD) along with other senior officers of the departments or agencies concerned.

The three municipal corporations informed that mechanical sweeping of the roads including the PWD roads is going on regularly for preventing suspension and re-suspension of dust due to plying of vehicles.

The three municipal corporations and the NDMC were directed to ensure that no uncovered building material is permitted on their respective roads. They were also directed to ensure that the conditions laid down in the sanctioned building plan for construction of the building are strictly followed by the owners and builders for effective control of dust.

It was also decided that two joint teams of officials from the Revenue Department, respective Municipal Corporations and Civil Defence Volunteers are deputed in each of the Districts for monitoring construction activity and taking preventing and punitive action against the violators of Dust Control Norms.

In this regard, special emphasis was laid on the municipal corporations and the PWD to ensure that dust control norms are strictly complied by them also while undertaking building construction activity. The Minister directed the Delhi Metro to ensure that construction activity does not lead to aggravation of air pollution in the national capital.

The Industries Department and Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (DSIIDC) were directed to put into action the plan for proper disposal of waste generated by the industrial units especially in Narela and Bawana Industrial areas. The officers concerned informed that night marshals have also been deputed to keep a vigil on the incidence of fire burning in industrial areas at night.

Transport Department informed that the present strength of 25 odd vehicles has been doubled from this week for monitoring and for taking action against the visible polluting vehicles, vehicles not having pollution certificates and against the vehicles more than 15 years old.

Traffic Police informed that they have been actively diverting non-destined vehicles from entering into Delhi. They are also issuing challans and taking punitive action against the people parking their vehicles on the roads which obstruct the normal flow of traffic.

Hussain observed that ready-mixed concrete plants need to be inspected regularly for checking air pollution. He urged all three Commissioners of the MCD to ensure control of instances of burning in open and compliance of dust control measures, failing which senior officers should be held accountable.

Hussain directed the PWD and Delhi Fire Services to undertake water sprinkling especially after Diwali for settling the suspended dust particles.

He also directed all the stakeholder departments and agencies to remain prepared for taking mandated actions under ‘very poor’ and ‘severe/ severe plus’ categories of air quality index in Delhi. (ANI)

Protests expected in Sabarimala during festive season: Special commissioner to Kerala HC

[India], Oct 23 (ANI): The special commissioner of Sabarimala M. Manoj submitted a report to the Kerala High Court informing that protests by frenzied devotees and protestors may lead to crowd turbulence and stampede leading to injuries and loss of lives during the festival season next month.

The report submitted by Manoj states that there is unconfirmed information that some protestors of political parties are camping in and around Sannidhanam to protest and prevent women between 10 and 50 from entering the area. “It is anticipated that protests by protestors and vigilantism by devotees acting with religious frenzy to prevent women between the age group of 10 to 50 will be prevalent during the Mandalam makaravilakku festival season commencing on 16 November 2018 and it may lead to chaos in Sabarimala, Pampa Nilakkal, Erumeli etc.” the report read.

“During festival season, there will be large crowds in places connected with Sabarimala pilgrimage and these types of protests by frenzied devotees and protesters may lead to stampede which may lead to injuries and loss of life of pilgrims, police, and others,” it noted.

Manoj also informed the high court that the state police have so far registered 16 criminal cases against the protestors.

In his elaborate report, he has also outlined the different incidents that unfolded after the temple was opened for the first time on October 17 after the Supreme Court verdict.

Sharing all these information with the Kerala High Court, the special commissioner has sought direction in this regard.

Sabarimala Temple witnessed a series of protests by devotees and priests as few women between the ages of 10 and 50 attempted to enter the holy shrine following the top court’s ruling lifting all restrictions on women’s entry into the holy shrine.

The Ayyappa temple closed on Monday after it opened for five days as a monthly ritual in the Malayalam month of Thulam.

A five-member constitutional bench headed by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra had, on September 28, lifted the ban on the entry of women in menstrual ages, terming the practice as “irrational and arbitrary”. (ANI)

Smart glasses are making a stylish comeback

Canadian start-up North is introducing a new set of completely transparent, full-color smart glasses that look like, well, glasses.

When Google Glass didn't take off, North saw an opportunity. This start-up, which created the Myo armband under the name Thalmic Labs a few years ago, concluded that the key to a practical and successful set of smart glasses was a combination of three characteristics simultaneously: a "normal" glasses look, an intuitive and non-distracting display, and a "different kind of company to make the above possible." And thus, Focals by North were conceived.

For the company, the appearance of the eyewear determines the success or failure of the product. The glasses are not only available in thousands of different colors, styles, and sizes to suit everyone's taste, but also vision correction can be integrated into each pair to accommodate those who can't afford to swap their prescription set for a smart one.

The display was carefully engineered to show information in a way that can be, "view[ed], act[ed] on, or dismiss[ed]" at what appears to be about an arm's length from the wearer. For the time being, the glasses can display text messages, calendars, directions, the weather, and even Amazon's Alexa and Uber. These interactions with the glasses are brief, typically lasting from 5 to 10 seconds, and are designed to take place during the mundane moments of our day, like walking to the car.

The start-up prides itself on its diverse and intelligent team that's expanded to nearly 500 employees in just five years. Between these members, the team accumulated hundreds of patents and patent applications covering topics from display tech to holography, everything in between, and a great deal beyond.

Focals with the standard smart lenses start at $999 and can be pre-ordered as of today. The frames require a sizing appointment at either the Brooklyn or Toronto showroom — pre-ordering will reserve your place in line. The classic-style Focals begin shipping in December and the round styles will be sent out in 2019. Prescription-based models are not yet available, but the company advises that interested customers reserve a sizing appointment to prepare for when they do come out.

Those who sing Vande Mataram are anti-India: Prakash Ambedkar

[India], Oct 23 (India): Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr B R Ambedkar and chief of Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh alleged that those who sing Vande Mataram are anti-India.

“If I sing Jana Gana Mana then I am anti-India and if I sing Vande Mataram then I am a true Indian? Who are you to give these certificates? I allege that those who sing Vande Mataram are anti-India,” he claimed on Monday.

Last month, Prakash Ambedkar had announced an alliance with Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) for the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra.

In August last year, Owaisi had termed the compulsion of singing Vande Mataram as ‘unconstitutional’ and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government of spreading Hindutva and destroying secularism from the nation. (ANI)

PM Modi influencing CBI investigation: Congress

[India], Oct 23 (ANI): Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress Party on Tuesday alleged that the Prime Minister was influencing the ongoing investigation against senior officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged that the habitual misuse of the CBI by Prime Minister Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah for fixing political opponents and illegal intervention tampering with the fair investigation of serious criminal cases has rendered CBI in unfathomable mess eroding its independence and credibility.

“What instructions did the Prime Minister give to chiefs of CBI and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW)? Does it not tantamount to illegal and unconstitutional interference in ongoing pending investigation by the head of state, nonetheless the Prime Minister? Once upon a time, a law minister asked the CBI to show affidavit to be submitted in the Supreme Court. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj sought his resignation in parliament. Is it the prerogative of the Prime Minister to call the head of CBI and RAW?” he asked.

Further questioning the credibility of other government institutions, Surjewala said, “Depreciation, denigration, dismantling and destroying CBI and other institution is sole agenda of Prime Minister Modi. The current political dispensation is involved in an attempt to shield the accused involved. He is illegally and unconstitutionally interfering in the investigation. CBI is not the only institution decimated by the Prime Minister to serve the BJP. There is a systematic pattern to vilify, disband and destroy Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax department, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), National Intelligence Agency (NIA). These institutions are being used as captive puppets rather of the political elite rather than serving the people.”

Surjewala raised suspicions vis-a-vis role of political executive along with the role of senior CBI officials. “There has been political hand behind putting a lid on Vyapam scam and giving clean chits to Madhya Pradesh BJP chief minister Shivraj Chouhan. Secondly, on May 24 the CBI special investigation team member and joint director of bank securities and fraud cell Rajiv Sigh was suddenly transferred. He was probing Rs 26,306 crore bank loot scam involving Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi. The abrupt transfer and repatriation of three officials namely- Meena Singh, joint director of special crimes division and Anish Prashad, CBI DIG and K Gopalakrishna Rao CBI SP investigating the Choksi-Modi financial scam.”

He also expressed resentment on the role of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)in the entire investigation. “CVC is shying away from its duties of apprehending people involved in cases of corruption. Why is it silent on the material placed before it? Is it is also being given instructions? Isn’t the PM systematically demolishing independent architecture of government agencies?” he concluded.

Earlier in the week, an FIR was filed by the CBI against special director Rakesh Asthana for allegedly accepting a bribe from a businessman, who was related to controversial meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi case. Asthana was heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that was probing Qureshi’s case. (ANI)
