I’m in touch with ‘missing’ Cong MLAs, don’t worry: Kumaraswamy

New Delhi: A day after two independent MLAs from Karnataka quit the HD Kumaraswamy government, 99 BJP MLAs who flew to Delhi over the weekend are still holed up at a five-star resort in Gurugram.

The MLAs are at the resort since the weekend, when the BJP had a two-day leadership conclave. The 99 MLAs are occupying 60 of its 100-odd rooms, say reports.

The chief minister has maintained a confident mien saying that they will remain in control despite the two independent MLAs quitting the coalition.

The Congress party, the alliance partner in the coalition government with the JD-S has moved its MLAs to a hotel in Mumbai. Reports say that three of the MLAs are missing.

However, Kumaraswamy rubbished the rumours saying, “The MLAs (Congress MLAs in a Mumbai hotel) are unreachable to the media, not to me. I am in touch with everybody and I am speaking to everybody, they will come back. Our coalition is going on smoothly. I was relaxed and I am relaxed. Don’t worry, be happy.”

The seven-month alliance of the Janata Dal Secular and the Congress party in Karnataka has been suffering from berth pangs right from the inception with many MLAs unhappy at being denied ministerial berths, making them open to poaching.

Bihar: 1 dead, 1 injured after being shot at by unidentified assailants

[India], Jan 16 (ANI): A professor teaching at a private institution here along with his cousin were shot at by a group of unidentified men on Wednesday.

The incident took place while the victims were on a rickshaw en route to their respective homes in Yusufpur from Hajipur railway station.

While Angad Kumar died on the spot, professor Anil Kumar was rushed to the nearby medical centre for treatment. He is said to be in a critical situation.

Police suspect it to be a case of robbery. However, a detailed investigation is being carried out.

This is the second case of violence in one week which has come to light from Bihar.

On January 13, a group of unidentified men assaulted a woman in Saharsa, who runs a private school, after she allegedly refused to pay extortion money to them. (ANI)

SC to hear plea challenging Nageswara Rao’s appointment as interim CBI director next week

[India], Jan 16 (ANI): The Supreme Court will hear next week a plea filed against M Nageswara Rao’s appointment as interim director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The plea, filed by an NGO, Common Cause, and social activist Anjali Bhardwaj, sought quashing of the January 10 order stating that duties of former CBI Director Alok Verma were to be handed over to Rao as an interim measure.

The plea also sought transparency in the process of short-listing, selection and appointment of the CBI Director.

The petition, filed through advocate Prashant Bhushan, said the order of appointing Rao as interim director of CBI was “illegal, arbitrary, malafide” and in violation of the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act (DSPE Act).

The DSPE Act as amended by the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 provides for the appointment of the CBI director by a high powered selection committee which does not have a preponderance of the government and its representatives. The committee consists of the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India or any Judge of Supreme Court nominated by him.

The petitioners further said the January 10 order states that the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Nageshwar Rao “as per the earlier arrangement”.

This earlier arrangement – October 23, 2018 order making Rao interim CBI Director, had been quashed by the Supreme Court on January 8 as it was made in violation of the procedure for appointment of CBI Director as defined in the DSPE Act, said the petition.

“However, the government still invoked its earlier order which had been quashed, to once again make Nageshwar Rao interim Director of the CBI even though it is not the competent authority and does not have any powers to make the appointment, without following the due process laid down in the DSPE Act i.e. appointment based on recommendations made by the high powered selection committee,” added the petition.

After the Selection Committee, comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice AK Sikri and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, removed Verma as CBI director, Rao was named the interim director of the premier investigative agency.

Verma, however, refused to take up his new posting – DG, Fire Services, Civil Defence and Home Guards. (ANI)

EC issues notice to BSP’s Jagat Singh for using objectionable language during campaigning

[India], Jan 16 (ANI): The Election Commission of India on Wednesday served a notice to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Jagat Singh for allegedly using objectionable language during poll campaigning here.

The assembly election in the Ramgarh constituency was postponed after the sudden demise of BSP candidate Lakshman Singh on November 28. The voting is now scheduled for January 28.

In the letter, the poll body alleged that Singh violated the Model code of conduct by using objectionable language thrice while addressing the public .

“While campaigning you have used objectionable language and words:-

  • People who will not vote for me will be beaten by shoes

  • I answer stones with AK-47

-So be it Ashok Gehlot, Narendra Modi or Vasundhara Raje, I will send all them packing,” the letter read.

The poll body demanded a reply from Singh within a period of three days.

“The returning officer has given three days time to Jagat Singh for giving clarification failing which a strict action will be taken again him in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act 1950 and Public Representation Act, 1951 and the Indian Penal Code”, the letter read.

Singh, who is now contesting Ramgarh elections from Alwar, was heard saying in a now viral video, “Where was BJP when our 200 boys were in danger, I went there to save them. I’m not going to turn my back or stay quiet. If there is fire, I will take the first bullet on my chest. Be it Narendra Modi, Vasundhara Raje or Ashok Gehlot, I will answer stones with AK-47 and send all of them away (Goli chalegi toh pehli goli mere seene mein lagegi. Pathar ka jawaab, AK-47 ke sath karta hoon main. Toh aajao Ashok ji, aajao Modi ji, aajao Vasundhra ji, sabko peti pack karke bhejunga.)”(ANI)
